Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I make a written submission about a planning permit application?

If you want to make a written submission to Council about a planning permit application you must make sure it is readable, particularly your name and contact details. If we can't identify who has made the submission we may not be able to consider it.

Submissions must clearly indicate:

  1. the submitter's name and postal address

  2. a daytime phone number

  3. the application number

  4. a description of what the application proposes (this can be found on the notice or sign)

  5. the address of the land the application is for

  6. an explanation about why the person either supports or opposes the application

Objections must clearly explain how the person would be directly affected if a planning permit was granted. Photos and other supporting material that will help both the Planner and the applicant understand the views in the submission may also be included. If you do not wish your submission to be viewed by the person applying for the permit or made public, please clearly state this.

You can either post your submission to PO Box 105, Lilydale Vic 3140 or sent via email

Planning Schemes

It is important that you write a personal objection and state how the establishment of a McDonald’s fast food outlet in Tecoma will affect you.

Below are a number of ideas to assist you in connecting your personal objections to the legislation under which the Shire of Yarra Ranges will be assessing the developer’s application. The overarching legislation is the Planning & Environment Act 1987 under which regional planning schemes are established.

Planning schemes set out policies and provisions for use, development and protection of land. Each local government area in Victoria is covered by a planning scheme. More detail is available from http://www.dpcd.vic.gov.au/planning/planningschemes. The planning scheme for the Shire of Yarra Ranges is available at http://planningschemes.dpcd.vic.gov.au/yarraranges/home.html.

Now click here to see a range of possible concerns you may have and supporting evidence.

These few pages have been established to help you make your submission to the Shire of Yarra Ranges Council. You can download a objection_kit2.pdf sheet (left) that will give you guidelines on making a submission. It will also help if you send a copy of your submission to your own local Councillor. This can be done via email if you wish.

Below is further information taken from the Shire’s website and an introduction to the planning scheme under which submissions will be assessed and this link to even more information to help strengthen your submission.

The Application Number is “YR-2011/647”

The address of the land is “1529 Burwood Hwy, Tecoma 3160”

Application Description is “Convenience restaurant”

IMPORTANT NOTE TO OBJECTORS !!!!

Objections must come from a “legal entity” and this must be confirmable. An email address is unfortunately not acceptable as a means of identification. PLEASE ensure your objection includes your full name and your postal address

Emails have gone out from Council to many people who emailed their objection because some people haven’t provided a valid postal address. The wording of this email may confuse some people and have you think that your objection was not accepted. This does NOT mean that your objection is invalid!

If you received an email from Council, please resend your objection (or update it and resend) ensuring that you have included your full name and address. This will also ensure that you will receive any future correspondence via the post.
